CINCINNATI - Procter & Gamble Co. expanded its recall of specific types of dry pet food Wednesday due to a possible salmonella infection.
Although no cases of salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, the company has voluntarily recalled variations of Eukanuba dry dog foods, IAMS dry dog foods and IAMS dry cat foods that were distributed in the United States.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, only 0.1 percent of the annual production of P&G's dry pet foods have been infected.
Salmonella can affect any animals eating these products and there is also a risk to humans who handle the contaminated pet products -- especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the food.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever are all human symptoms of Salmonella. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with any of these products should see a doctor.
Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
These products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site, the FDA reports.

In April, P&G expanded a recall to its Natura Pet Products for dogs and cats to include all products made at a Fremont, Nebraska production facility between January and March of 2013.
The recall included products manufactured under the brand names Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise and Karma.
Before that, P&G announced a voluntary recall of products made during a two-week period in December after a Michigan inspector found evidence of Salmonella in a bag of randomly tested pet food.
Wednesday's recall was the fourth product-quality problem announced since March 18 for P&G's pet care division, which has struggled to recover from an industry-wide recall in 2007.
