When it comes to looking your best, it’s all about the hair and the make-up.
“It just gives you confidence,” said Andi Manuilow, general manager of Salon GW in Dunedin. “It gives you attitude.”
For most women it starts with lipstick.
“It just livens you up and makes you feel like a woman,” said model Tara Patten.
But what do you look for in lip color?
“Something that’s going to stay on for a reasonable amount of time and not end up on my coffee cup,” said model Joanne Gonzales.
With products promising long lasting wear from 10 to 24 hours, there are plenty of options.
“I’m really skeptical about 24 hours, 16 hours, 12 hours,” said model Khrista Isaacs.
We asked Isaacs and a group of women modeling LOX hair extensions at GW Salon to put six major “long lasting” lipstick brands to the test. Their prices range from more than $3 to $26.
“I always feel like when I spend a little bit of money, I get a little bit more for my money,” Manuilow said.
The women agreed to test the lipstick for three days, making note of its feel, coverage and whether it truly is long-lasting. Along the way, they documented the results.
The MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolour, Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick and e.l.f. Studio Moisturizing Lipstick each promise long-lasting wear.
At $26, the Estee Lauder product is the most expensive. The e.l.f. product costs the least at just over $3.
“It’s an inexpensive lip color, so that is always attractive,” Gonzalez said of the e.l.f. product.
CoverGirl Outlast, Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor and L’Oreal Paris Infallible Lipstick promise to last 24, 16 and 10 hours, respectively.
“One of the other things I noticed that I really liked about this, is that it didn’t come off on glasses. I drink a lot of bottled water,” Patten said.
As for the “staying power,” there was only one that didn’t last.
“It’s about 7:15 in the evening and I’m pretty well faded as you can pretty well see,” Gonzales said of the e.l.f. Studio Moisturizing Lipstick. “Yep, not too much color left.”
Gonzales said the lipstick lasted less than two hours and left a residue on her coffee mug, but she liked its color, feel and cost. And based on the low price, she doesn’t mind reapplying.
The e.l.f. lipstick wasn’t the only product the models tested that left behind a smudge – the Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick did, too.
“I’m not sure if you can see this where, but we’ve got lipstick stains on the top of my water bottle,” said Isaacs.
Each of the models had their favorites despite the differences in the products.
The MAC, Revlon and Cover Girl products each came with lip gloss, which the models said helped with the dry feeling. They also suggest shopping around to find which product works for you.
