Tampa Bay Business Journal: May 31, 2013

TAMPA - In this week's Tampa Bay Business Journal segment, editor Alexis Muellner talks about some of the Bay Area's coolest office spaces, why the construction industry is heating up, and the increase in entrepreneurial activity.

This week the Tampa Bay Business Journal is highlighting the coolest office spaces in the Bay Area.

Among the paper's favorites is The Clear Agency's 4,000-square-foot loft space in the old McCrory building. The office features comfortable couches, an air-hockey table, a shower and a well-stocked refrigerator.

Clear CEO Jenn Greacen says the environment is all about creating a relaxed yet stimulating space for employees to work.

McGraw-Hill Construction reports construction contracts for the Tampa Bay area are up 49% in the first four months of 2013 compared to the same period one year ago. Companies are investing in quality projects that can bring positive returns instead of building just anywhere.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, nearly 13% of Americans were starting or running new businesses last year. That's the highest rate since 1999.

The reason more people are being their own boss is not because they can not find a job elsewhere, but because they see an opportunity. That is a good sign as the country continue to slowly recover from the Great Recession.
