Tampa Bay Business Journal: May 2, 2014

TAMPA - In this week's Tampa Bay Business Journal segment, editor Alexis Muellner discusses the diversity problems facing many area law firms, a night on the IIFA Green Carpet, and the Coolest Offices of 2014 contest.

Research conducted by the Tampa Bay Business Journal finds white, male lawyers make up the majority of employees at Bay Area law firms. In fact, just about 25 percent of firms' lawyers locally are females.

The disparity has a two-fold effect. Judges come from the ranks of lawyers. With a smaller number of female or minority lawyers that could affect the makeup of the judiciary.

It also has a direct impact on businesses opportunities who may decide to do business with a specific law firm based on its inclusive practices.

Alexis spent six hours on the Green Carpet at the 2014 International Indian Film Academy awards taking more than 500 photos of the Bollywood stars. A 12-year-old girl helped him determine the "A" stars from the "nobodies."

The Tampa Bay Business Journal is seeking entries for its annual Coolest Office Space award. Companies in Hernando, Pasco, Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties that have not won the coolest office space contest in their current office are eligible to participate.

The award is more than just bragging rights. Past winners have utilized the award to recruit and retain employees.
