TAMPA - In this week's Tampa Bay Business Journal segment, editor Alexis Muellner discusses the digital revolution occurring at Valpak, what Checkers CEO Rick Silva learned from Undercover Boss, and the best area non-profit organizations.
Valpak President Michael Vivio wants his company to be known for more than just paper coupons in a blue envelope. He feels to succeed he must bring his company into the digital age.
"In today's world, following is not a recipe for success," Vivio said. "We have an opportunity here. We can run towards it instead of running away from it."
Vivio is transforming Valpak through aggressive experimentation and being the first to try things in the industry. The changes Vivio is making has executives at other companies flying to the Bay Area to learn how Valpak is leading in innovation.
Checkers Restaurants CEO Rick Silva appeared on CBS' Undercover Boss in 2011 as Alex Garcia. He went undercover as a new employee so learn firsthand what was and wasn't working in his restaurants.
This year he returned to the show to share how his experienced helped lead to fresh business decision for the fast-food restaurant chain.
This week the Business Journal recognized excellence in Tampa Bay's nonprofit community in its annual Nonprofit of the Year Awards. Among the organizations honored for fiscal responsibility were the YMCA of St. Petersburg, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels.
