If you live near water or have inadequate drainage, your area might encounter a flood. Floods can happen for any number of reasons, including intense downpours of rain and broken water mains. Ensuring your safety means being prepared. If you already know that your area is prone to flood, you need to know and be prepared for the worst. Research previous floods in your area. Make a list of goods you should buy for a flood, including ready-to-eat food, bottled water, and extra batteries. You should have a good light source and a battery operated radio for weather updates. Be set to leave your house immediately if necessary. When flooding starts move your valuables to the highest level in your house and turn of your water, gas and electricity before you leave. Make sure your doors and windows are locked. If you are travelling by car, be very careful, and don't drive into moving water. High water can ruin your brakes. If you're buying a house in the flood plain, consider purchasing flood insurance from the government.
