[Read More] Chapter 1: LifeEmily Rifkin appeared to be an all-American girl, growing up in Tampa and graduating from high school with honors. Stacy Nicholson was a street-smart southern-fried tomboy who grew up in St Petersburg. They were young women with separate lives, but a common struggle, they were addicted to prescription pain pills. One of them won’t live to see their 30th birthday. Chapter 2: DeathWhen the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the diagnosis was bleak. An overdose of Oxycodone was shutting down the vital organs. Stacy’s mother braced for the worst. Chapter 3: AddictionEmily’s sister knew what her parents refused to believe, that her sister had a powerful addiction. Residential treatment is costly. Depending on the facility out-of-pocket expenses for a family runs between $1,200 and $5,000. Researchers say about 50 percent of addiction is genetic. Chapter 4: The LawDespite a judge’s order, Emily has to go to a halfway house and wait to get into a residential treatment program. Her life hangs in the balance. Chapter 5: RelapseStacy’s sobriety was fragile and would not last. At a friends house Stacy happened to notice a bottle of pills in the bathroom. From the counter it went into her pocket. Emily’s sister discovers her at the halfway house high as a kite. Chapter 6: FutureHundreds show up at the funeral to pay their respect. Recovery is for life and it’s something you have to work on everyday of your life.
