Bay Area 2014 Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.

On this holiday, many of us spend time doing family gatherings, backyard BBQs or enjoying a nice evening out with friends and family.

However you choose to celebrate Memorial Day, remember to honor those who have lost their lives for our great freedoms.

Memorial Day Parade | 8:00 AM

  • Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco serves as Grand Marshal over this parade including marching bands and Shriner units. The parade honoring men and women who have died serving in the armed forces starts at Dupree Lakes Boulevard off Collier Parkway and ends just past the Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veterans Nursing Home on Parkway Boulevard.

American Heart Association's CPR/Automated External Defibrillator Class | 9:00 AM

  • Hernando County Recreation offers this free class to the general public (not available for hospital staff). It includes CPR adult, infant and child, as well as AED and First Aid certification for two years. Registration required as space is limited.

  • Strap on a heavy back pack, hoist a ladder or run with weights on your ankles. Add weight to your load anyway you want and join in a walk that represents the weight of our memories for those who have served and currently serve our country and towns. Benefits families of fallen or injured military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel.

Bay Pines VA Memorial Day Ceremony | 10:00 AM

  • Event with featured speakers including representatives from the VA, a performance by the Amputee Veterans of America Support Team (an amputee color guard unit), musical performances, firing salute and taps performance.   • The museum invites families to honor the holiday with rock wall climbing, bungee jumping, a bounce house, military vehicle rides, war reenactors, meet and greets with the Bomber Girls, karate demonstrations and a dance recital.

  • The ceremony will include a demonstration by Central High School's NJROTC Drill Team. Following will

    Florida National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony | 11:00 AM

    • The keynote speaker is Maj. Gen. Michael T. Plehn, Principal Director for Middle East Policy. Steve Jerve of WFLA TV News Channel 8 will be master of ceremonies. Joseph Harrin will lead the Hernando High School Band as they perform patriotic music prior to and during the ceremony. Linda Burnette and the Double Trouble Quartet will sing, Naomi McClain will perform on bagpipes, and Isaac Bobonis will play Taps. There will be a rifle salute by the Marine Corps League Detachment 708 of Spring Hill and the Central High School NJROTC Color Guard will post the colors. The Ye Mystic Air Krewe will provide a flyover. Guests are encouraged to arrive early. Seating is limited; bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Plant Museum is participating in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2014.
    • The Museum will officially launch the program with MILITARY FAMILIES DAY, Sunday, May 25, 2014. In honor of Memorial Day Weekend, the Museum remembers those who have served our country by all veterans, active duty, or retired military personnel and their families into the Museum as our guests, free admission.
    • Military families may enjoy self-guided and audio tours in the Museum throughout the day. In addition, at 2 pm the Museum’s Upstairs/ Downstairs at the Tampa Bay Hotel Live Theatre series will feature Henry Dobson, Spanish-American War Soldier, 1898.
