Angelina Jolie writes she had double mastectomy to prevent cancer

Film star and philanthropist Angelina Jolie has publicly announced that she's had a double mastectomy to prevent cancer in a New York Times op-ed piece.

Jolie, 37, said she made the decision after learning that she carried the BRCA1 gene, which makes it very likely that she will get breast cancer.

Jolie wrapped up three months of surgical procedures in April.

Her choice was spurred by her mother's death from the disease at 56, and doctors told Jolie she had an 87 percent chance of contracting it.

Much like ABC Action News' very own health reporter, Linda Hurtado, who shared in October of 2011 that she was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. The doctors caught it right on time and she also had a double mastectomy after her mother died from the disease.
