Tampa, Fla. - If you're a South Floridian of a certain age, you probably remember where you were the morning it snowed as far south as Miami.
I was a 14-year-old boy in Ft. Lauderdale 35 years ago today and had never seen snow before. There it was, dusting the football field of my high school, briefly covering the palm fronds and windshields.
Who could forget all the newspaper headlines the morning after.
The Miami News called it "The day that couldn't happen".
The most memorable headline for me came from the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. The 4-inch type simply read "SNOW!"
It was the only South Florida snowfall on record in the 20th century. By mid-morning it was all gone.
While we got just a dusting in South Florida, the accumulation around Tampa Bay was about 2-tenths of an inch. That was enough to bring the city to a virtual standstill for a day.
