More shelters open as temperatures drop

TAMPA BAY - More shelters have opened their doors as temperatures continue to drop across the viewing area.

Hillsborough County opened five shelters Sunday night:

  • Brandon Community Center, 510 East Sadie Street, Brandon. (813) 635-8179. Opened at 5:30 p.m. For individuals and families with children.
  • Metropolitan Ministries, 2010 North Florida Avenue, Tampa. (813) 209-1077. Opened at 4:30 p.m. for families.
  • Salvation Army, 1514 North Florida Avenue, Tampa. (813)221-4440. Opened at 4 p.m. for adults only.
  • Jackson Springs Recreation Center, 8620 Jackson Spring Road in Town 'N Country. (813) 554-5064. Opened at 6:30 p.m. for adults and families.
  • Wimauma Community Center, 5705 Hillsborough Street in Wimauma. Opened at 6:30 p.m. for adults and families.

Polk County American Red Cross opened two shelters Sunday night:

  • Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 532 Avenue M NW, Winter Haven
  • First Presbyterian Church, 16 North 3rd Street, Lake Wales

People wishing to stay at the shelters need to be registered by 10 p.m. The shelters will be open from 6 p.m. Sunday night to 6 a.m. Monday morning.

Pinellas and Pasco Counties have announced various locations that  opened Sunday night for people faced with being in the cold.

Families in Pinellas County will be placed in hotels. Family coordinators will make arrangements.

  • Tarpon Springs Families: Mary Dekasin (727) 479-2914

Pinellas County shelters will open at 6 p.m. Sunday night. The shelters will offer hot meals and warm places to stay until 6 a.m. the next morning.

The following is a list of Pinellas County shelter locations for men and women:

  • Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church (primary shelter), 110 S. Ft. Harrison Avenue, Clearwater, FL 33756. 727-442-3677. 
  • The facility can hold 75 people.
  • St. Ceclia Catholic Church (back-up shelter), 820 Jasmine Way, Clearwater, FL 33756. 727-447-3494. The facility can hold 45 people.
  • Trinity Church of the Nazarene, 1000 55th St. South, Gulfport, FL 33707. 727-321-1598. Capacity 20 people.
  • Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast in Pinellas Park. 7790 61st Street North, Pinellas Park, FL 33781. 727-574-5437. Capacity 250 people. Transportation is provided to and from this shelter by Boley, Inc.
  • Northwest Presbyterian Church, 6330 54th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33706. 727-544-4551. Capacity 75.
  • Salvation Army, 1400 4th Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. 727-822-4954. Capacity 25.
  • The Turning Point 1810 5th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Capacity 25.
  • Tarpon Springs, St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, 812 East Tarpon Avenue, Tarpon Springs, FL, 34689. Capacity 25.

Pasco County Shelters will be open at 6 p.m.

  • Impact Family Ministries.   5533 River Gulf Rd.  Port Richey  . 727-869-6426. Adults Only.
  • The Holy Ground Shelter. 8835 Denton Avenue, Hudson. Families accepted.
  • The Christian Church. 34921 Chauncy Rd. Zephryhills. (813) 810-8670. Families accepted.
  • Limited hotel vouchers are available for families only. Contact Angela Littlefield at (727) 247-9448.
