TAMPA - A pedestrian was struck and killed on Gibsonton Drive, east of US-41, before dawn on Thursday morning. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Chad Everett Fortney of Gibsonton was crossing Gibsonton Drive around 6:18 AM and was hit by Mark Andrew Calvo of Riverview. There is no traffic light or pedestrian crosswalk in the area.
The HCSO also is investigating an overnight accident involving a bicyclist. That crash occurred around 11:15 PM Wednesday on Fletcher Avenue east of 22nd Street. The crash report says Joseph Troutwine of Tampa rode into the path of a Honda driven by Anh Thi Hgoc To, also of Tampa. Troutwine was taken to St. Joseph's with critical injuries.
These accidents come the same week that the Florida Department of Transportation unveiled a new awareness campaign that targets pedestrian and bicycle safety. The four-week pilot campaign “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow…Safety Doesn’t Happen By Accident” initiative is a pilot program in Tampa Bay and Miami, and includes a TV, print, social media and education campaign.
