TAMPA - Former University of Tampa quarterback and NFL star Freddie Solomon died Monday afternoon after a nine-month battle with colon and liver cancer.

He was 59 years old.

Solomon worked for decades with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, and was known simply as "Coach" by most in the community.

A memorial service is planned at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Tampa at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 20.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Tampa Freddie Solomon Scholarship Fund or HCSO Charities, Inc., or the DeBartolo Family Foundation.
