ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg mayor Bill Foster declared Thursday 'Rays Day.'
The mayor did so a day after the Rays completed the greatest September comeback in Major League Baseball history, rallying from nine games back of the Boston Red Sox to win the wild card.
No team had ever come back from a deficit that large during the month of September.
The Rays will now play the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series. The two teams played each other last year in the American League Division Series, with the Rangers winning three games to two.
Foster also held a rally outside City Hall on Thursday, during which he raised a Rays flag on the flagpole.
