TAMPA - A woman managed to stay hidden and on her cell phone during a burglary to her house, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The 19-year old called 9-1-1 after hearing someone enter her house when she was home alone.
"There's somebody in my house. I'm not sure if I know them or not," said the caller to a 9-1-1 operator.
"They're in your house?" the operator said.
"Yes, I heard them open the back door," said the caller. "Ok, and you're in the house right now?" said the operator. "I am. I'm locked in the room," she said.
Investigators said the burglar suspect is Jose Rodriguez, 38, who was arrested after he was found hiding in the middle of a lake. Deputies said after they arrived, Rodriguez bolted from the house and jumped into the water. He apparently swam to a small island in the middle of the lake, according to investigators.
At one point, the caller sounded terrified after being on the phone for several minutes before help arrived.
"We have one deputy that's there," said the operator.
"I don't see anybody. I can see out the front window and there's no one here," the caller said.
The operator managed to keep the victim calm, despite the tense situation inside the house. After deputies secured the area and the caller physically saw a uniformed deputy at the house, she finally showed some relief.
"People are really bold," said the operator.
"It was broad daylight. I stood in the kitchen because I didn't know what to do," she said. "I saw him creep around the back."
Rodriguez is facing burglary charges along with eluding law enforcement.
