TAMPA, Fla. - A man who was hit and killed after stepping in front of a Tampa police patrol car early Saturday morning had wandered away from his assisted living facility, Tampa police said.
The officer was traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Boulevard near 34th Street around 5 a.m. when a man either jumped or walked into the path of the oncoming patrol car, according to police.
The man identified as Randolph McClendon, 62, died at the scene. Police said McClendon was reported missing after the crash and they were able to confirm that he was pedestrian involved in the crash. Police said McClendon had dementia and wandered away from his home on 11th Ave. East in Tampa.
