PORT CHARLOTTE - Charlotte County Sheriff deputies are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who died from a gunshot wound, Sunday morning, officials say.

According to authorities, deputies responded to a call around 3:40 a.m. at 21302 Hubbard Ave in Port Charlotte.

Once on scene, they found the small child suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Peace River Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injury.

Detectives believe the child got ahold of an unsecured gun and somehow discharged the weapon.

The child’s parents have been interviewed, but no charges are pending at this time.
