ORLANDO, Fla. - Orlando police say a man bludgeoned his fiancee to death after she tried to break off their engagement.

Sgt. Barb Jones says 41-year-old Nestor Habarugira greeted officers at the door of his apartment early Sunday and led them to the body of 34-year-old Ruth Owino. Police say Habarugira told the officers that the couple was arguing about ending their relationship when Owino threw an exercise weight at him. According to police, Habarugira said he then used the weight to hit Owino.

Habarugira was charged Sunday with first-degree murder with a weapon and held without bond. Jail records did not show whether he had an attorney.

Neighbors told the Orlando Sentinel that Owino left her home in Kenya for the U.S. five years ago. Police said Habarugira is a native of Burundi.
