Most legislative incumbents leading their races

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Incumbents have escaped nearly unscathed in Florida's legislative races, although state Rep. Chris Dorworth, slated to become House speaker in two years, could be headed for a recount.

A Lake Mary Republican haunted by personal and financial issues, Dorworth trailed Democratic challenger Mike Clelland through much of the evening Tuesday, but clung to a lead of 98 votes with three precincts yet to report.

Sixteen Senate incumbents won, while three Republican incumbents -- Peter Nehr, Scott Plakon and Shawn Harrison -- were upset in House contests as Democrats gained a half dozen seats to cut their deficit to 79-41. They'll no longer be forced to deal with a Republican super majority that effectively left them procedurally powerless the past two legislative sessions.
