FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A 33-year-old woman has been arrested after police say she left her newborn baby in a trash bin near a Fort Lauderdale hotel.
Alexandria Sladon-Marler was arrested Monday and remains in the Broward County Jail where she faces charges of manslaughter and child neglect that caused great harm.
The infant was found in the trash on Aug. 10, wrapped in a pillowcase and towels.
Police initially questioned Sladon-Marler. Officials say she had been treated at Broward Health Medical Center in early August. She told employees that she had had an abortion.
The South Florida SunSentinel (http://sunsent.nl/Qi4E7O ) reports a medical examiner determined the baby appeared full term and that the umbilical cord had been torn or ripped.
Police say Sladon-Marler had been staying at the hotel where the baby was found.
