First photo ever uploaded on the Internet celebrates 20th anniversary

The first photo ever uploaded to the Internet celebrates its 20th anniversary this week.

The photo was a promotional shot of Les Horribles Cernettes, a comedic musical group composed of girlfriends and secretaries of CERN scientists, according to ABC News .

ABC News says Silvano de Gennaro, an I.T. developer at CERN and also manager of the Cernettes, took the photo while backstage at a music festival organized by the lab's administrators. He edited it using the first version of Adobe Photoshop, and saved it as a GIF file on his Macintosh.

Then, Internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee, also working at CERN at the time, developed a new version of the World Wide Web that supported photos, and he uploaded the Cernettes photo to what might be called the first ever band website — a page on the CERN website devoted to its musical acts.

ABC News reports that the exact date of when the photo was published online is murky, because Berners-Lee was still working on the development and the photo likely came on and off several times.

Scientists at CERN can not only celebrate the anniversary of the first photo ever, but also their recent discover of the "God particle."
