Facebook has unveiled a popular new feature that uses an algorithm involving life events, highlighted posts and your most popular stories to create a customized " Year in Review " for you.  Visit http://www.facebook.com/yearinreview .

At the top you'll see a colorful montage of ever-changing photos if you were tagged in more than 8 photos this year. Then you'll see all the pages and friends you added throughout the year, pictures, status updates and highlighted events that you were tagged in, shared and that were popular on Facebook. Facebook makes it easy to share this "Year in Review" with your networks.

But the best part of Facebook's Year in Review project is its collection of what we - collectively - thought was important this year. Facebook has put together its own "Year in Review' which allows us to see how our own stories and the stories of our friends come together to create trends across the United States.

Below, we've chronicled what Facebook says were the top events, songs, movies, books, check-ins, political topics, public figures, technological advances and sports topics that defined 2012 - and just click on the links to learn more about any of the topics with videos, photos galleries and more.
