TAMPA - Nikon is about to offer up a new DSLR featuring an eyebrow-raising 36.3 megapixel sensor. But the company really had videographers in mind when it designed this technological goody.
It's not cheap though. But at a reported USA price of $2,999.95, it has a lot to offer.
If you're into the details, this is seen as a direct competitor to Canon's 5D Mark II.
To handle the giant 36.3 megapixel images a USB 3.0 port is part of the camera's hardware. A huge hard drive and a fast processor will come in handy as a single non-Photoshopped TIFF file can top 200 megabytes.
For the videographer, the specs are impressive. The D800 offers uncompressed HDMI output. It is capable of 1080p at 30 or 24 frames per second. 720p is available at 30 or 60 frames. Video can be viewed on the cameras rear LCD or on an external monitor.
A headphone jack is included as well as audio metering on the D800's LCD.
The D800 is expected to be available in the USA in March.
