MIAMI, Fla. - Tropical Storm Humberto is close to becoming the first hurricane of the 2013 Atlantic season. Far to the west, Garbrielle has grown back into a tropical storm and is bearing down on Bermuda.
At 11 a.m., Humberto was located about 220 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, was moving toward the northwest at 9 mph.
A sharp turn to the north is expected late Wednesday. That will keep the storm far from the US mainland.
Gabrielle was located about 120 miles south of Bermuda. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, was moving north at 12 mph.
Gabrielle is expected to pass near or over Bermuda tonight and early Wednesday.
Conditions are relatively quiet elsewhere in the tropics.
