TAMPA - Tavares Spencer, the Tampa man accused in a nearly deadly hate crime, has his trial starting in Downtown Tampa today.
Police say Spencer lured a transgender woman, who we're only identifying as "Coko," to an East Tampa home and shot her at least twice in May.
Prosecutors and Spencer's defense attorney will be interviewing potential jury members in the attempted murder trial.
Prosecutors are saying Spencer wanted to date Coko, but when he found out she was born biologically a man, he became enraged.
Coko told us she played dead after being shot in the hip at first and took off running when Spencer fired more shots.
