TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa police officers were involved in a shooting Sunday night, authorities say.

Police responded to Central Court Apartments just before 8:00 p.m. after someone reported shots were being fired in the area.

Once officers arrived on scene, they found a person matching the description of the suspect. When they approached the suspec, identified as 16-year-old Jevon Neal, he started to walk away.

Officers ordered him to stop, but the suspect then began to run away , leading them on a foot pursuit.

The suspect ran up a staircase on the outside of the apartment building, leading the officers to the third floor.

As the suspect up the stairs he grabbed for something in a pant leg pocket.

Officers saw the suspect grabbing for something and ordered him to stop and show his hands.

The suspect did not comply and turned to face officers. When he turned, he was armed with a pistol gripped assault shotgun.

When officers ordered him to put down the weapon, the suspect did not do as ordered.

Fearing for their lives, officers fired at the suspect.

Authorities say Neal was shot at least once. He was taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital where he died.

Two officers were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
