LAKELAND, Fla. - A Tampa man searching for scrap metal in a Lakeland wooded area ended up finding a container of human bones Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Homicide detectives are investigating to get to the bottom of what happened.
John Sargent, 49, was on the lookout for metal on North Wabash Avenue between Memorial Boulevard and Crutchfield Road, when he found a large container minutes before 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Inside the container, he saw a human skull and some bones.
There were also more bones scattered near the container.
Sargent called the sheriff’s office to report the human remains.
Detectives and crime scene investigators responded, processing the scene and searching for additional evidence.
The bones will be taken to the Medical Examiner's Office to be examined. Officials hope to identify the deceased person and determine his or her cause of death.
The bones appear to have belonged to an adult.
The investigation is ongoing.
