TAMPA - An unreported three-car crash on the Gandy Bridge on Sunday night was unusual in three ways. It was posted on YouTube. No one was injured. And no one was cited. But the Florida Highway Patrol expects someone will be.
"The YouTube video was instrumental in helping reconstruct what happened. Because when he (law enforcement officer) arrives, he finds vehicles, but no occupants," said FHP Sergeant Steve Gaskins.
Sgt. Gaskins said the penalties for racing go far beyond a speeding ticket. "Loss of license, severe fines, even Jail time. I can get very serious very quickly.
Last year in Florida, 144 teenagers were killed in crashes -- the number one cause of death for people in that age group.
Despite the risk, young people gather along the Gandy Bridge almost every night to race or watch a race.
Cars and Concepts auto mechanic Thomas Boylan said the risk is unnecessary. "It's very sad, because there are a lot of safe places to do it right."
Boylan limits his racing to the track now, but admits he used to hang out along the bridge.
Boylan says the wide open roadway where it's easy to spot police makes it an irresistible draw for car enthusiasts who want to test their cars, their peers and themselves.
"They got the testosterone going on, especially the young adults. They're testing the waters and some learn the lesson the hard way."
