LUTZ, Fla. - The flag hangs at half staff in front the school that bares his name. George Steinbrenner High School opened its doors one year ago. it was just last May that Hillsborough County dedicated the Lutz school to him.

"He was able to see how the community really feels about what he's done here, I think that's the best way to recognize and individual who has given so much," said Hillsborough County School Board President Susan Valdes.

The list of giving spans more than three decades. But behind every act of kindness are the faces that benefitted from them, like 17 year old David Chiles.

"We weren't going to be able to have middle school sports programs but he donated all the money to have it so I played every sport in middle school and it was a lot of fun," Chile said.

In 1998, Steinbrenner donated $200,000 to reestablish the county's middle school athletics. Chiles took part then, and today he attends Steinbrenner High School where he plays basketball.

And the benevolence goes beyond the world of sports. When the Gaither High School band was invited to participate in the inaugural parade for President George w. Bush, Steinbrenner paid to get them to Washington.

He also funded countless scholarships, all promoted student community service all for the community he called home for 34 years.
