SOUTH TAMPA, Fla. - Rumors of a popular specialty grocery store coming to Tampa have many people talking tonight. Trader Joe's has more than 300 stores across the country and this potential location would mark the fourth store in Florida.
Recent rumors say Trader Joe's, known for selling its own brands of food, plus gourmet, organic and imported goods, may soon open a store in South Tampa.
It's a chain so popular, 3,000 people lined up outside when a store opened in Sarasota last Fall.
Josie Fernandez says she goes to the store when she visits her cousin in Atlanta. She says it's the bargains that keep her cousin coming back. Fernandez said, "She liked everything about the store. She said the prices were great."
Shoppers in Tampa are excited about the possibility of a store on the South side. Fernandez said, "It would be great. Then we wouldn't have to go to Sarasota. Especially in this area."
The rumored location is Shapes gym on Swann Avenue. Managers say they are not selling the property and have no plans on moving.
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn says if the store ever does come here, Tampa is ready. "The numbers make sense that there's enough what we call 'heads in beds' with disposable income that the decision to make a commitment to Tampa would be financially feasible."
City planning and development officials say no construction permits have been filed with their department. Trader Joe's representatives say say at this point, nothing is confirmed and they have no further comment.
