TAMPA - Residents at an assisted living facility can thank a 20-year-old man for helping to put out a fire early Friday.
Units responded to a call from the Hyde Park Adult Living Facility at 3011 West DeLeon Street shortly after 3 a.m.
When crews arrived, Kenneth Zack, who was staying with a relative nearby, was battling the fire with several small fire extinguishers. He heard the yelling and commotion coming from the facility. Zack then jumped a fence and ran to the scene.
Police officers arrived about the same time and helped get residents away from the fire, which was brought under control in about ten minutes.
No one was hurt.
Investigators say one of the residents, Caroline Victory, was smoking in bed and accidentally set the bed on fire. The damage was limited to that one apartment.
Damage is estimated to be about $40,000.
