TAMPA - Political insiders are weighing in on Mitt Romney's choice of Rep. Paul Ryan for his vice presidential candidate. It's a move political experts say energizes the GOP base.
Republican Adam Goodman says Ryan is the right choice. Goodman said, "He's intelligent. He's feet on the ground. He was brought up believing in the kinds of things that we all feel are necessary to move the country forward."
Florida Governor Rick Scott made a stop in Lakeland today. He attended the "Back to School Bash," at the Florida Children's Home and gave his opinion about the choice. Governor Scott said, "He's going to make sure that we have the right resources at the federal level. We have the right policies lower taxes to do the same things we've done here in Florida that's turned our economy around."
The 42-year-old Ryan is a seven term U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin and Chairman of the House Budget Committee. He has a wife, Janna, and three kids. Ryan is known for his views on economic policy and proposed changes to Medicare. That's a move Democrats call controversial. Former Congressman Jim Davis worked on the House Budget Committee with Ryan. Davis said, "Saying that Medicare ought to be capped as far as federal spending. So if somebody here in Florida or elsewhere is very very sick on Medicare, they could actually run out of Medicare dollars at the end of the year. At the end of their life."
But, Republicans say this election is about government spending and the economy. They say that could strengthen Romney's ties with middle-of-the-road Catholic voters in some states, though some Democrats point out Ryan offers very little foreign policy experience.
Both Romney and Ryan will be here for the RNC in 16 days.
