TAMPA - A 26-year-old man who allegedly reached for a Tampa Police officer's gun died after he was shot by another officer, a police spokesman said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the vicinity of 15th Street and Bouganvillea. Officer William Cain had pulled over a man for driving erratically, investigators said.
Police say Pedro Quiles provided the driver's license of a man who had been wanted for driving on a suspended license.
Cain called for backup, and it appeared Quiles was going to cooperate, however he grabbed Cain's gun and a violent struggle ensued, according to officials. Officer Scott Savitt warned Quiles to let it go, but he continued to pull on the weapon, and Savitt shot Quiles twice.
Quiles was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Both officers have been with the department for the last 2 years, with Cain spending 5 years prior as a reserve Tampa officer. Savitt spent 2 years on St. Petersburg's police force before joining TPD.
