TOWN 'N COUNTRY, Fla. - Hit and runs are unfortunately rather common in the Tampa Bay area, but in one unusual case, deputies were on the hunt for the hit pedestrian rather than the driver.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. on Hillsborough Avenue near Longboat Boulevard in the Town N Country area.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies said Philip Jackson, 25, of Tampa was crossing Hillsborough Avenue when he was hit by the mirror of a car driven by Chuckarat Ratanakarn.
Ratanakarn got out of his car to help Jackson, but deputies said that's when Jackson started to punch him in the face. According to a release, Ratanakarn fell to the ground and Jackson demanded his money.
Officials said Jackson then went to inside Ratanakarn's car looking for valuables, then pointed a gun into the air and fired a shot.
He then ran from the scene, but deputies were able to later find the suspect at a nearby apartment complex.
Ratanakarn was taken to the hospital for his injuries sustained during the attack.
Jackson was also taken to a hospital to get treatment for injuries from getting hit by a vehicle, then he was taken into custody.
He faces several charges, including robbery, felony battery, discharging a firearm in public and burglary of an unoccupied conveyance.
The driver will not face any charges. The investigation is ongoing.
