TAMPA - Air conditioning repair work forced the evacuation of the Park Tower in downtown Tampa Tuesday afternoon.
According to Tampa Fire Rescue, the work caused the release of some noxious fumes on the fifth floor of the parking garage.
The fumes caused breathing problems for several people inside the building. Two people had to be transported to Tampa General Hospital. One complained of breathing troubles, the other was having chest pains. Four other people were treated at the scene.
Tampa Fire Rescue evacuated all 35 floors of the Park Tower and took air samples on each floor. They eventually gave the building the all clear.
According to Tampa Police, workers were in the process of removing the chiller from the air conditioning system when the incident occurred. It appears residual refrigerant was released and caused the fume.
Tampa Police have closed two blocks of North Tampa Street from East Twiggs Street to Kennedy Boulevard. Madison Street is also closed from North Tampa Street to North Franklin Street.
