TAMPA - For many baseball fans in Tampa, the Tampa Bay Rays are not the home team. The home team is the Tampa Yankees.
Now, Orlando may be a home wrecker. Orange County is in talks with the Steinbrenner family to move the minor league Yankees to Orlando, a team spokeswoman confirmed.
Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty has scheduled a major announcement for tomorrow.
"What will be announced is that there is an agreement to discuss moving," said Yankees spokeswoman Alice McGillion.
The major league New York Yankees will continue to train at Steinbrenner Field, McGillion said.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Jim Norman helped push through the deal to build Steinbrenner Field. "Contractually, a major league team must be there," said Norman. "The Tampa Yankees are not under contract."
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio said, through her spokeswoman, she would not comment until after the Orlando news conference.
