TAMPA, Fla. - One of the area's premier malls could soon be adding a workout facility. Planning officials with the City of Tampa are discussing plans for a new, multi-million dollar mega-gym.
Amey Major is a hostess at Lee Roy Selmon's by day and a fitness buff by night. She works out several times per week. Major said, "I do anything between yoga, boxing, kick boxing. I run. I do a lot of different stuff. I do aerobics at home."
That's why Major is pleased to hear about the possibility of a Life Time Fitness gym opening at International Plaza. Major said, "I think it's a great idea. Right around the corner. I work right across the street. I go to school around the corner. It's in the center of Tampa."
Life Time officials say their facilities are typically very large, usually around 50,000 square feet. They say the building would include basketball courts, a gym, a spa with manicures, and botox and weight loss programs.
J.C Passaro works near the mall. Passaro said, "It's definitely convenient. There's not too many gyms around here. I live up in Carrolwood, but it would be nice to have a gym near work, down in this area."
Life Time, based in Minnesota, currently has 106 clubs across the country, including one in Boca Raton. Tampa planning officials plan to meet with Life Time reps in mid May.
Thomas Snelling is with Tampa's Planning and evelopment Department. Snelling said, "It makes them go through the permitting system much quicker. It shaves a great deal of time off that process, so they can get in and out of the system. Get their permits and get to site clearing and building much faster."
While mall officials would not comment on the proposed project, a Life Time spokesperson says if all goes as planned, the facility would take around a year to build.
