TAMPA, Fla. - When you struggle to make ends meet, like Angie Hardy does, it's easy to find hope in two cardboard boxes.
"It means we're going to have food to eat, and I'm very appreciative that we were able to get it," she said.
Hardy is one of 400 families that applied for and received a 25-pound box of food and a box of personal care products. The event is part of Metropolitan Ministries' partnership with the global organization Feed The Children.
"Hunger is a challenge in America. It's a challenge in Tampa Bay. So to have a partner like Feed The Children say we care about children in your community, we care about families in your community, we're going to help you out, is just a real blessing," explained Metropolitan Ministries President Tim Marks.
"This is a blessing, yes," said Mary Sailor, as boxes were being loaded into a car trunk nearby.
The event not only fills a need for those who receive the boxes of food and hygiene products, but it also is an opportunity for those with a heart to serve others.
"People truly care about others in order to give," said Sherika Miller as she walked to her car with two toddlers in tow.
Nearly 700 members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity are in Tampa for a regional meeting. Part of their calling is to serve their community.
"We just really felt it was very important to kick off our weekend with doing something right in the community; and that's being active and being positive and uplifting our community. Making sure that we're representing our fraternity in the right way. And we want to make sure that we're being blessing to others," fraternity member Tony Brewington said.
Also helping today was a high school lacrosse team from New York that's in town for a tournament.
"It just feels good to give back," smiled Andy Crocker from Rochester, New York.
Boxes of hope, proving that people can care for one another.
