TAMPA - The Lowry Park Zoo has two new residents.

The zoo announced on Tuesday that a pair of African penguin chicks hatched on Jan. 31 and Feb. 3.

This is the first time the zoo has had two successful hatchlings to the same parents in the same breeding cycle. At this point, the chicks gender is not known.

The penguin chicks will remain with their parents (known as Amber and Violet) for a few weeks. They will then transition to zoo keeper care so they can learn to be independent. In several months, they will join the penguin colony on exhibit at the zoo.

These are the fourth and fifth hatchlings at the zoo in the past 12 months.
