TAMPA - A loaded handgun found by a 9-year-old boy in an Ybor City movie theater bathroom is the personal property of a Hillsborough County detective who left it there accidentally on Sunday afternoon, according to a sheriff's statement.
Detective Luke Detective Luke Hussey went to the Muvico Theater on 8th Avenue around 3 p.m. to watch a movie. Before the feature began, Hussey went to the restroom and then returned to his theater seat.
Later, the boy went into a restroom stall and announced to his father, "Daddy, there is a gun in here."
The theater manager called Tampa police who took possession of the Glock 26.
About an hour and a half into the movie, Detective Hussey realized he had left the gun in the restroom and went to retrieve it.
When he saw that it was gone, the manager said that TPD had impounded the weapon and gave him the case number.
Hussey contacted TPD and was informed of the necessary procedures for the return of the gun.
According to a sheriff's statement, "HCSO takes this matter very seriously and has already began an administrative investigation to determine any policy violations that may have occurred."
