TAMPA - Former teacher Debra LaFave, who pleaded guilty in 2005 to having sex with a student, arrived in court this morning with her dad and her mom.
"My mom was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and I spent my of probation, excuse me, off probation, taking care of her and I'm so fortunate that I was able to take her to chemo treatments and spend the nights with her when she needed me the most and I appreciate the news people who have spoke on the truth," said Debra LaFave.
Today, a Hillsborough County Judge ordered LaFave back on probation. She still has four years and two months to serve, monitored by a probation officer.
Now a mom herself to twins, she's still required by law to stay away from schools and the 14-year student she pleaded guilty to having sex with.
"It's been eight and a half years now and this case is still not over,” said her attorney John Fitzgibbons.
LaFave's attorney says they have appealed to the highest court in the state.
"The Supreme Court of Florida has accepted jurisdiction of the case. We're hopeful we will receive a favorable ruling in the next six months to a year from the Supreme Court and that should finally conclude things one way or another in this case," he said.
A judge reminded LaFave she must obey a curfew from 10 pm to 6 am. She left court with her parents-- her mom telling us she's feeling good.
“Fantastic. God is good," she said.
