We all wish we could turn our dreams into a reality and that's exactly what one local man did with the help of a few friends.
Black and Denim Apparel Company is a small, local clothing line right here in Tampa.
It's the brainchild of Roberto Torres, Chris Findeisen, and Luis Montanez.
In 2006, Roberto, Chris, and Luis teamed up to begin creating the Black and Denim clothing line. "It's a James Dean look with a Johnny Cash soundtrack," Roberto said. "We founded this company based on the belief that if you put in hard work, then you're going to reap the benefits in the end."
Black and Denim got its first big break back in 2010 when Urban Body, a small clothing store in the SoHo district of South Tampa, began displaying and selling some of their clothing. "People like the fact it's a local Tampa based company. They like the fact it's U.S. made, and they like the vintage designs on the t-shirts," Esther Dill, Vice-President of Urban Body said.
Everything in this line is American made. The designs, tagging, bagging, and shipping is all done right here in Tampa.
Now the company is taking another big step. Opening their first, flagship boutique off 7th Avenue in Ybor City. "We have never had a retail location of our own before, so this little 500-square-foot store is going to lead the way," Roberto said.
The store is expected to open on August 29th with a denim ribbon cutting ceremony.
"I think it cements us in the community, it gives us a sort of presence, it's just a win-win situation for us," Roberto said.
Plans are also in the works to begin selling Black and Denim clothing in Macy's and Nordstrom stores by the Spring of next year.
For now, this small, Tampa based clothing line, is just happy to be opening up it's first store in the city where the dream all began. "It's a huge deal, it's an incredible commitment'" Roberto said.
