TAMPA - When you were a child, who did you look up to? A parent, a teacher, maybe a coach? Think about how that person changed your life. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is asking you to now be that person for a child.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is in desperate need of help with 600 to 700 kids looking for sponsors, its a that time to get the ball rolling.
"These kids really need the community's help," says Gerri Freid Kramer of Big Brothers Big Sisters Tampa Bay. "Just someone that will hang out with them. They don't demand much at all."
Derrick Crowley has already taken that step to be a mentor. In fact, he has been a Big Brother to the same young man for the past three years!
"People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel," says Crowley.
He says the way he feels when he volunteers is food for his soul, just a much as it is for his Little whom he mentors.
"Its time, its not money, its time. All anybody every wants is time, just give me time," says Crowley with a smile.
Crowley says watching his little grow up since he was six has been worth every minute. Knowing that he has been a driving force, helping to shape his life and guide him in the right direction. He says he sees his Little every weekend, even calls him everyday! Crowley adds his Little has actually shown him how to be a better person.
"Making me more patient, making me more friendly, making me more outgoing. If a person is in a position where he or she can be a role model, then they should be," says Crowley.
