Residents in the Sulphur Springs neighborhood contacted ABC Action News after months of being ignored by the City of Tampa's Code Enforcement about an abandoned house that's been over run by weeds. Now, code enforcement managers say that by 8:00 a.m. Friday, a neighborhood enhancement team will be there, all because of our story.
“ We're getting critters and all kinds of animals going through, and it's just really nasty,” A racely G arcia said.
Garcia lives behind an over grown home.
“ I've got snakes behind my house and I know it's coming from over here,” said L uis P adilla.
Padilla lives next to the over grown home.
“ I was concerned about a fire hazard. My house is wood, as well as several others in the area...” Linda Gomes said.
She lives next to the over grown home.
G omes and her neighbors say they've called and emailed numerous complaints about th e home on E ast N edro R oad to code enforcement, dating back to J uly.
B ack then, G omes says she was assured o n A ugust 17 someone was going to come out and take care of the property.”
Now, it's O ctober, and that contractor never came.
ABC Action News took her concerns to S al R uggrio , the N eighborhood E nhancement M anager for the City of Tampa.
“ I know that the case has been active since J uly. There have been some personnel changes in the area and that's not an excuse but we have a lot of cases and we understand the blight in this neighborhood,” Ruggrio said.
He says he looked into th e house Thursday morning after ABC Action News called.
Ruggrio says he lea rned then that the home is in bankruptcy.
While he can't do what neighbors really wan t, which is to demolish the house, he says “T here's not a lot of structural damage that we see right now that would allow us to demolish that home.”
He says h e will get something done -- hopefully making neighbors eyes less sore.
“ I have to say you prompted some action, yeah you did. I'll make sure tomorrow the property will be cut,” Ruggrio said.
Mayor B uckhorn launc h ed two initiatives in th e Sulphur Springs neighborhood back in M arch to help make it safer and clean it up.
ABC Action News reached out to him Thursday, but was told by his assi s tant that he's out of town, and those initiatives were not geared toward this sort of issue.
