Two men confess to fatally beating woman over stolen shoes, St. Pete Police say

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Two men were arrested Wednesday night after confessing to the Christmas Eve murder of a woman found in a St. Pete lake Christmas Day.

Latrelle McKnight, 21, and Santanio Smith, 21, told police they beat the victim to death after she stole shoes, according to a St. Pete Police report.

McKnight and Smith reportedly beat 42-year-old transient Stacia Berman to death at an apartment on the 500 block of 8 th Street North  on Christmas Eve.

The suspects reportedly put Berman’s body into the truck of a vehicle and took her to Lake Maggiore, where they placed her body.

Detectives say they got a tip about the beating. Witnesses who saw the beating cooperated with police.

McKnight and Smith confessed to the beating, saying Berman stole shoes from them.

Both men were charged with second degree murder. Detectives anticipate more arrests.
