ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg police have recovered two guns stolen from a detective's unmarked vehicle earlier this week. The vehicle was stolen from the detective's driveway and driven into Lake Maggiore where it was spotted by a passerby.
In addition to the detective's personally-owned Colt AR-15 rifle and his department-issued Glock .45 caliber handgun, a portable police radio was stolen. The radio has not been recovered.
According to a police statement, detectives developed information that led to the recovery of the guns at separate locations in St. Petersburg late Tuesday. The AR-15 was recovered around 6 p.m. and the Glock was recovered about a half-hour later.
The information about the guns came from confidential sources. So far, there have been no arrests. Because the investigation is ongoing, police spokesman Mike Puetz would not elaborate on a suspect or suspects.
"The main issue was trying to get the guns back, which we did," Puetz said.
