ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg officers thought they found a vehicle stolen in a carjacking, but after a high speed chase and foot pursuit, found a rape suspect instead, police said.

Officers reported seeing a 2010 Ford Edge late Sunday night that matched the description of a vehicle stolen in a carjacking over the weekend. When they activated their emergency lights, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, police said.

"The suspect bailed out of the car and took off on foot," said police spokesman Mike Puetz. "Our officers ran him down... We caught him when he was going over a chain link fence."

It turns out suspect Calvin Swain wasn't running because he was a carjacker. According to the police report, Swain told them he was driving on a suspended license and didn't want to go to jail for it.

Swain did not mention the 11 rocks of crack cocaine police found inn his car. Nor did he mention an outstanding warrant for lewd and lascivious activity on a victim over 18 years of age, said police.

Police had no immediate information on the nature of the rape charge.
