ST. PETERSBURG - Like the host city of the Republican National Convention, Tampa, the neighboring city of St. Petersburg also plans to set up an Event Zone during the convention next month.

Tropicana Field will host a cocktail party for 20,000 delegates, journalists and dignitaries on Aug. 26.  A parade and public viewing area are set up nearby.

The Event Zone will run roughly from Fifth Avenue N to Seventh Avenue S, and from 22nd Street to the shore of Tampa Bay.

From 12:01am, Aug. 26 to 6am, Aug. 27, weapons are banned from the zone, as are fireworks, aerosol cans, camping gear, coolers, thermoses, bottles, and cans.

Masks are prohibited in the Event Zone, but will be allowed in the public viewing area and parade route.

St. Petersburg City Council will vote on the temporary ordinance on Thursday.  A final vote and public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 2.
