ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The fate of the St. Pete Pier is still in the air. The St. Petersburg City Council voted 5-3 Thursday to ask residents to vote on the future of the landmark.
Earlier this year, when the city approved a new design for the pier called The Lens, members of the group voteonthepier.com spoke out, saying the new design was just not what the area needs.
Some of the reasons cited included design, function, and cost.
They want any new pier and the related expenses to go through a vote by the citizens of St. Petersburg.
Thursday they got their wish.
The pier will be put to a vote on the November, 2012 ballot.
A public hearing has been scheduled for August 2 to determine the language on the ballot.
