ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Multiple law enforcement agencies rescued six fishermen after their boat capsized near the Gandy Bridge in Tampa Bay on Sunday evening.
A female boater said she tread water for more than an hour after the 26-foot boat capsized near Wheedon Island.
One boater chose to swim to shore and called for help.
The boaters were caught in high winds and rough seas as a storm moved over Tampa Bay.
A Tampa Fire-Rescue Marine official said spot storms like the one the boaters were caught in are common in Tampa Bay.
The storms can produce large waves, like the one that capsized the boat. The official said life jackets were trapped in a compartment of the boat when it capsized.
None of the boaters sustained injuries and are expected to be okay. They have yet to be identified.
